Meeting report
The 7th Joint Meeting of the European Neuropeptide Club and the American Summer Neuropeptide Conference was held in Pécs, Hungary on 21 - 24. June, 2010. Both societies celebrated the 20th anniversary of their foundation there. 2010 is a special time in the life of Pécs because it is the Cultural Capital of Europe. The international neuropeptide conference contributed to the scientific program of the year.
The meeting was organized by the staff of the Department of Pharmacology and Pharmacotherapy, Faculty of Medicine, Pécs University. Hotel Palatinus located in the centre of the historical town with an elegant art noveau-styled Conference Hall and its infrastructure provided an appropriate environment for the Conference.
Hundred and twenty participants from twenty countries attended the meeting. The organizers paid particular attention to cover a broad range of topics of contemporary neuroscience from basic theoretical to applied clinical research. The scientific program was organized into two plenary lectures and 10 symposia - with the participation of outstanding scientists from all over the world. Topics included: New avenues for tachykinin research, Multiple function of TRP channels in health and disease, Role of TRP channels in pain and inflammation, Peptidergic control of joint tissue in arthritis, Neuropeptides and their receptors: new therapeutic targets, Neurodegeneration and neuroprotection in drug design, Role of neuropeptides in stress related disorders, Opioid-like peptides and receptors: evolution, interactions, regulations and pharmacology. Keynote lecturers, Piero Geppetti remembered on the twenty year old European Neuropeptide Club then Illana Gozes gave a talk representing the twenty year old Summer Neuropeptide Conference. Poster sessions were also important parts of the scientific program allowing participants to present and discuss their newest findings. The Manfred Zimmermann award has been founded for the outstanding scientist on the field of neuropeptide research who made creditable efforts for keeping up the European Neuropeptide Club. In this year Manfred Zimmermann and the Local Organizing Committee made the award for Piero Geppetti. Young participants were supported by travel and best poster awards. The social events, welcome drink, wine tasting tour and gala dinner covered pleasant environment for the friendly conversations and informal discussions. Also, the 2000 year old city - site of the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage, and one of the Cultural Capitals of Europe in 2010 - provided guests with the opportunity to visit unique museums and exhibitions.
